The After Effects of Pregnancy

There are a lot of things about pregnancy that people don't tell you about. It's probably because they're scary things. For instance, nobody told me that right after you give birth, you STILL look pregnant. Boy, did that cause me a lot of heartache. People even asked me how far along I was. I wanted to strangle them for being so rude (BTW --It's even worse the second time around).

There's other stuff that happens but I won't go into detail about them because what I really want to blog about today is the hair thing. All through your pregnancy your hair is glorious, shiny and your hair stops falling out. That's right. You don't shed for like--NINE months. Then three or four months after you give birth, they start shedding. Not just a little but GOBS of hair fall out. There's hair on the floor, in the shower, in the crib, clogging the drain, in bed, on your brush, on...well you get the idea. The loss of hair is made even worse because it happens right around the time that the baby starts grabbing at your hair. So every time he grabs at your hair, he's got fistfuls of hair in between his itty bitty fingers. There's so much hair that it begs the question...

"Am I suffering from female patterned baldness?!?!"

So of course I complained to my husband about it. I told him that I was worried because I didn't have this much hair fall out after my daughter was born and that I wondered if it's normal. His response?

"Now you know how I feel."

He suffers from male patterned baldness. But is it really comparable to female patterned baldness? I don't think so. Women over look the loss of hair on a man. In fact, some chicks dig it. But if a woman has a bald head there is no way in hell a man would look twice at her. Shoot, even I would feel sorry for a balding woman and thank my lucky stars that I have hair.

In any event, my hair has started to grow back. But I'm still complaining (what else is new right?). Now, everytime I pull my hair back, there are these little tiny baby hairs sticking up all over my head. So, not only do I look lame in my mommy rags but my hair makes me look like a porcupine.

Here's a pic of it:

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

This is an old pic and it's worse now because even MORE hairs have grown back on all parts of my head, not just my forehead.

Guess what my hubb's response was, when I complained about it...

"Lucky." [that it grows back].

I Heart myBloglog.com and Other Things

Let me just say that myBlogLog.com is such a cool site. It's basically a site for the blogging community. And as of late, it has been facilitating my search for good blogs to read. In the past, I would just go to my blog and hit the "next blog" button at the top and let chance bring me to my next reading adventure. But alas, doing that has brought me to many foreign blogs that I can't even read or understand and I've only found a handful of good blogs that way. Now, instead of doing the Russian Roulette blog search, I lurk around using myBlogLog.com.

Now, another reason why I heart myBloglog.com is that after joining last week, I decided to log on and look at it this morning. I looked at my stats and it made me feel all tingly inside when I saw my page stats. People actually have links to my blog!!! Okay-- so they were only for one post (on the House of Blues ). But hey-- links back are cool to me. One was from roccadeluca.com (A semi-famous band) and a site dedicated to Kiefer Sutherland (who apparently started his own record label and rocco is one of his bands). At first I thought it actually was the official Kiefer Sutherland page, but after signing up and seeing it, I think it's only a forum for Kiefer fans. Thanks for reading!

I want to mention some of the blogs I've been reading lately:

FYI-- I subscribe to these feeds and my favorite RSS reader is... Google Reader. I Heart all things Google.

------------------------------------

In addition to reading the above mentioned blogs, I've started a book club in my neighborhood and our first book is My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult. Since I'm first to host, I picked the book. I'll let you know how it is.

Book Reviews (Photos from Amazon.com):

Waiting by Ha Jin

This book was good but somewhat of a disappointment because everyone told me how good it was. So I read it with very high expectations (On the bright side, it reads like a Hemingway book). It's about a Chinese military doctor that marries a woman his parents found for him (she's not very pretty and he's kind of ashamed of her). He meets another woman while stationed at a hospital and "falls in love" with her. He has to wait for a very long time to get a divorce from his wife in order to marry the new woman. And to prevent spoiling the book... he continues to wait in the end. The lesson learned here is...be careful what you wish for because just might get it.

A Wedding in December by Anita Shreve

This was a book that my other book club picked. This book blows (so I won't describe it)...and don't read anything that Anita Shreve writes because everyone in my other book club said that her other books blow as well.

------------------------------------

I also, wanted to mention how I'm able to have time to blog right now when I have both kids home with me...my little girl is watching ice age next to my computer and my son is on the floor crawling after all the Cheerios I dropped on the floor for him. Gotta go... Cheerios only buy me tens of minutes (not thousands)... Thanks General Mills for inventing Cheerios.

Sleep Glorious Sleep

Finally! My baby boy started sleeping through the night and it's not a fluke. He goes to sleep at about 8:30pm and then wakes up at 5:00am. He's been doing this for about a week and a half. I think it may be related to the fact that he started crawling last week. He poops himself out (as in tires himself not literally pooping) trying to crawl to everything.

He's a lot more difficult to keep track of now. I'm sure it will be a nightmare when he starts walking. I'm not sure how I'm going to deal with two walking (running) children that could very possibly run in opposite directions. Which one would I chase after first?

Speaking of my other child, this morning was a particularly difficult morning with her. She screamed bloody murder as we tried to get her in her car seat so hubby could take her to pre-school. "I DON'T WANT TO GO TO SCHOOL! SEATS COLD! OUCH-IE. OUCH-IE. I WANT TO WEAR MY JAMMIES" The whole neighborhood probably thought we were torturing her -- she truly was screaming REALLY loud. So, I think I'm going to stop doling $600 a month to the ta ta pre-school she's been going to for a year and a half now. I'm taking her out and finding one that she likes or at least is closer to my home. If this is how she reacts to pre-school (where all she has to do is play) I can't imagine how she'll react to elementary school or even high school. Ugh.

Mommy Underachiever

We went to play group today. Sometimes play group makes me feel like a bad mom.

The woman that hosted has two kids and she's a great mom. She's one of those moms that only buys organic food for her and her family. It made me think...am I a bad mother because I don't do my grocery shopping exclusively at Whole Foods or Trader Joes? The only organic stuff I buy are the organic brands that they have at Costco. (If I'm being honest--I really only by organic milk) Oh yeah, I forgot that I buy organic baby food -- but then they sell the stuff at Wal Mart and Target so it's convenient. Also, if I'm being honest (again) I really only buy it because my son prefers it over the non-organic Gerber stuff.

My friend also doesn't want to send her kids to public school. Hmm--I just can't justify spending that kind of money on compulsory schooling. Definitely for college but K thru 12? No. I'd really like to retire and spend time alone with my husband when my kids are grown instead working to pay off all the private schooling.

Does this make me the the type of mom that just doesn't care enough?

Another Live Performance

We went to the House Of Blues in Hollywood last night to see Mat Kearney perform. I hadn't been to a performance at the HOB in years and forgot how tiresome it is being on your feet for four hours. I don't know how the women wearing heels survived the entire show. There were two bands that opened for him-- The Feeling and Rocco DeLuca. The Feeling was okay. Their last songs were decent but some of the other ones were a little cheesy. The lead singer looks a little psycho to me. But then most bands have at least one member that looks a little psycho. Rocco DeLuca was good. I actually liked their sound more than their singing. Earlier, I had seen one of the guitarists at the restaurant portion of the club and I was excited when I saw him on stage. We were walk ins but at the top of the list until he came in sporting a blue wrist band. We wound up eating at the bar anyway so it didn't matter. I've always been a star struck type person but I don't ask for autographs--I just like seeing stars. Although this band hasn't really hit it big time yet I feel like I can call him a star.

When the band was introduced by some woman from Star 98.7, she mentioned that Kiefer Sutherland and a bunny was in the crowd to watch Rocco. I didn't see Kiefer but I did see the bunny. The bunny was absolutely fascinating. He was dancing and grooving. It was kind of psychadelic and scary (Good thing I was stone cold sober otherwise I might have freaked out and got paranoid). I'm thinking he had to be someone famous (perhaps Kiefer?--BTW I looked up Kiefer's itunes list and Rocco is on his list several times) otherwise security would never have let him in. Here's some film of said bunny although it's dark and my cell phone blows when it comes to video. Bunny:

Mat Kearney was excellent. What I really liked about HOB was that it was a much smaller venue than the Gibson where we saw Snow Patrol. We got to see him up close (although in the "filmage" it looks like we're far away). He seems like a such a nice guy. He even introduced his parents and brother while he was on stage. I think he's was kind of a christian rocker(before he got radio time)-- at least that is the impression I get from reading some of the comments on his myspace page.

Mat Kearney:

As an aside, my husband made a comment about how a lot of white people dance funny. I told him that he's a good example of it seeing as how he himself is caucasion and he dances funny (cute but still funny). But when we were at the Snow Patrol concert we saw this lady dancing all crazy (she's on the right hand side and I'm pointing her out):

Here's a little bit from the concert that I posted here. I couldn't find my camera when I posted this entry. If you watch it, you'll notice that it pans to the left and shows people holding out their cell phones. I learned that instead of swaying to music waving their lighters, people now sway to the music holding their cell phones with the light/flashes on. Much safer than the days of lighter waving. So here it is:

My Top Ten

Top Ten Reasons Why My Toddler Drives Me Nuts

10. She has no concept of time. We are always either really early or really late. The only concept that she gets in relation to time is the fact that when it's dark-- she has to go to bed. I can't even tell her to hurry up because it then gets into a big "discussion" of why we must hurry up.

me: Come on baby. We gotta go. If we're late, we won't make it to ballet in time and it'll be over.

her:But the sun's out.

me:It doesn't matter if the sun's out. Ballet is only for an hour and then everyone goes bye bye.

her:Why does everyone go bye bye if it's not dark?

me:Because ballet is only for an HOUR, now hurry up so we can go see your cousin there.

her:Why?

me:Why what? Why is ballet only an hour or why do we have to hurry up or why should we go see your cousin?

her:Why?

And people wonder why I don't show up to things anymore. Every time I tote these kids off somewhere, it's an event.

9. Oh god, the WHINING!!!!

8. Of course whining goes hand in hand with the constant questioning:

  • "Why?"
  • "Wwwwhhhhhy? "(the whining question)
  • "What's baby brother saying?" She asks me this a lot these days. I always start out telling her what I think he may be trying to be say. So I tell her "he's saying he's hungry" or "he's saying he loves you". But then she keeps asking me what he's saying so I get frustrated and just tell her that he's talking baby talk and her guess is as good as mine.
  • "What did you say? I can't hear you." I know she can hear me but she just likes to say this. It drives me nuts. Which leads me to...

7. She'll ignore me! She usually does this when it's time to leave a friend's house or when she doesn't want to do something. At least when she says she can't hear me, she acknowledges my presence but ignoring me truly drives me insane.

6. She is sooo girlie that she has to change her outfit at least 3 times a day. This makes laundry chores a pain for me!

5. She can't figure out when she's tired. She'll be rubbing her eyes and yawning but she still fights me when I try to put her to bed.

4. She is not interested in anything unless her baby brother is playing with it. Including Daddy.

3. She has no inner monologue...

me:Baby, can you hug your Aunt S good bye?

her (loudly):I don't like her.

When my hubby took her to school the other day (she was super cranky that morning), she told her daddy in front of one of the other teachers the following:"I don't want to go to school. I want to go to the other school. I don't like my teacher." Of course later on when I asked her why she didn't like her teacher she told me that she liked her teacher and that her teacher was her favorite in the whole wide world. I don't get it. I think she's just a home body. BTW, when she said the other school, she meant the schools that we previewed because I'm looking for a school that is closer to my home.

2. She's germ infested. She gets sick at least once a month and gives it to her brother (he's only 8 months old and he's been perpetually sick since he was 2 months old) who in turn gives it to me. Of course, I don't always get it because my immune system is decent but still. Taking care of sick babies really blows.

1. She's a mini me. Isn't it ironic that I drove my mother crazy when I was a child and now here I am and my daughter is doing the same thing to me? Pay back truly is a bitch.

Notes on American Idol

In commemoration of the start of the 6th season of American Idol's top twelve, I've decided to comment on each of the contestants. Photos from American Idol Website.

Contestant #1: Blake Lewis

Blake is actually my favorite male contestant. It's not because he's the best vocalist but because I think he's the coolest and most dynamic. I like the beep boxing, the dancing and I've liked the songs that he's picked. I see him as the kind of guy that would do the same type of songs as Paul Oakenfold (Starry Eyed Surprise). Reminds me of: Michael Rapaport (from Beautiful Girls) you'd know who I was talking about when you see him.

Contestant #2: Brandon Rogers

I liked his auditions but he's lost his lustre now. Especially because he couldn't remember the words. Perhaps he should go back to singing background vocals. Reminds me of:Eddie Murphy's portrayal of a Buckwheat that actually knows how to sing.

Contestant #3: Chris Richardson

I like him as a person but I don't like his voice. He kind of sounds like Cartman singing "I'm Sailing Away". Hubby thinks he sounds like the chipmunks. Reminds me of: A nameless generic teenage actor.

Contestant #4: Chris Sligh

Chris is my second favorite male contestant. I like him because he's funny and he sings well. I think though, that he should be lead vocals in a band rather than an American Idol. He always talks about how drop dead gorgeous his wife is. She's cute but she's not as great looking as he seems to think. But I guess all husbands should feel this way about their wives. Reminds me of:The lead singer for the Counting Crows.

Contestant #5: Gina Glocksen

I like Gina. I'd have to say she's my second favorite female contestant. Every year I always like the girl that is sort of the rock vocalist. I think she'd do well singing a Pink song. Reminds me of:Pink-- the singer.

Contestant #6: Haley Scarnato

I don't think that she should have made it because Sabrina Sloan was a MUCH better singer. I'm not sure what happened. Also, she is kind of forgettable as Simon points out except for the fact that she reminds me of someone we all know... Reminds me of:Lacey Peterson who was murdered by her husband while 8 months pregnant.

Contestant #7: Jordin Sparks

I don't really have much to say about her. She's pretty but a little on the chunky side. She's kind of young too. Reminds me of:A chubby Jasmine Guy.

Contestant #8: Lakisha Jones

Awesome singer. But she's not cool enough. Reminds me of:Remember Nell Carter (the star of that show Gimme a Break--with little Joey Lawrence)?

Contestant #9: Melinda Doolittle

Melinda is my favorite female contestant. She's sings really well, she's funny and she doesn't have a chip on her shoulder. My only problem with her is that she has a big head on a little body or it just looks that way because she has no neck. Reminds me of:Gladys Knight in midget form.

Contestant #10: Phil Stacey

I really liked him during the auditions but now I'm over it. He needs to grow out his hair even if he has a receding. Reason? Because he doesn't look like he shaves his head by choice. His ears stick out so he doesn't look good bald (he looks like he's on chemo). Also, he looks like he should be tall and lanky but he's kind of wide around the middle. Reminds me of:The Hunchback of Notre Dame -- crazy eyes, bald head.

Contestant #11: Sanjaya Malakar

When is this kid going to get booted? He can't sing and he picks weird outfits. Reminds me of:An Indian version of Michael Jackson complete with creepy child molester aura and strangely androgynous.

Contestant #12: Stephanie Edwards

She's okay. Reminds me of:A skinnier and more educated Fantasia.

My First Concert in 8 Years

Last weekend, my husband and I went to Universal City Walk for a concert. We called the babysitter and headed for Hollywood. We hadn't had a date night since December so it was nice to get out. We had dinner at Bubba Gump's (Yummy but supremely fatty foods). I had a Mango Lada (a pina colada with mango) and Hubby had a couple pilsners of beer. We also decided to do a shot and in trying to figure out what kind of shot we wanted to do, we delved into our memory of shots:
  • Kamikaze
  • Buttery Nipple
  • Purple Hooter
  • Tequila
  • Vodka

As I've gotten older, my desire to do "quality shots" has increased. Kamikaze? Nah-- I don't like the mixture of alcohol involved in it (these were actually really popular on our wedding day). Butter Nipple? I've never been a fan of Coffee. Purple Hooter? I think the maximum age limit for a purple hooter is like 20. Tequila? I hate doing tequila shots. They've always been so harsh on me--difficult to go down, burning throat, lots of gagging, lime ruins the enamel on your teeth... Vodka-- my only sensible choice. Chilled good vodka goes down safe and smooth...Belvedere here I come.

Hubby chooses Tequila.

What? I wanted to us to do the same shots. The waitress told me that it wouldn't be so bad if we do shots of Patron. OK--I decided to do it but good tequila still SMELLS like regular tequila, so I got a little queasy when our shots came. But it went down good...like butter (or in my case cherry pie). Strangely I wasn't buzzed. When we got to the amphitheatre, I got a margarita. Still no buzz. Hubby on the other hand started talking a mile a minute-- I knew he was well on his way so I quit drinking. Hubby was so buzzed that he told the chick next to him that he was pregnant because she was hiccuping. Oddly, it made her stop hiccuping. I think that trick works best on people that don't have kids.

Snow Patrol was awesome (maybe I have a thing for Irish bands). I also like one of the bands that opened for them -- OK Go. I think they won a Grammy for one of their videos. I was going to post some pictures but I seem to have misplaced my camera after we went to the Santa Anita Races. So I'll post them later.

Ohmigod!

I ate an entire cherry pie between Thursday and Sunday. Not just an ordinary sized pie from Marie Callendars but a Costco sized pie...

Enough said.
